What AI assistants told Appsmith's buyers

Appsmith makes a low-code platform that teams use to build internal tools, dashboards and admin panels. Kite asked four AI assistants three questions an Appsmith buyer might ask, without naming Appsmith.

Six of the twelve answers recommended Appsmith. Every assistant recommended it at least once, and none did for the question about security and running the platform on your own servers. Retool was the name recommended most often instead.

How the check works

Kite reads your homepage and works out what you sell and where. It writes three questions a buyer would ask an AI assistant, and it leaves your name out of them, because your customers don't know it yet.

Kite then asks each question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, with web search on. For ChatGPT and Gemini, it reads the answer a signed-out visitor sees in the app. Perplexity answers through its own answer service, and Claude through its developer service with web search. If an app can't be reached, Kite asks through that assistant's developer service instead, and the result says so.

Kite reads every answer to see whether it recommends you, lists the businesses it recommended instead, and keeps the sources it cited. Answers can differ a little from what a signed-in customer sees.

Do it yourself

How to check whether ChatGPT recommends you, by hand

You can run the same check yourself. It takes about half an hour.

  1. Use ChatGPT signed out, or open a temporary chat with personalization turned off, so your own history doesn't shape the answer.
  2. Turn on web search and start a fresh conversation for each question.
  3. Ask three questions a customer would ask, and include your city if you serve one area. For example: "Who are the best family dentists in Denver for nervous patients?"
  4. Write down every business recommended and every website the answer cites.
  5. Repeat the same questions in Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and again next month. Answers move, and one check is a snapshot.

Kite does all of this in about 45 seconds, and once you sign up it can repeat the check every week.

Why do AI assistants recommend some businesses and not others?

AI assistants recommend the businesses they can find good evidence for. When an assistant searches the web to answer a question, it leans on pages that answer that exact question plainly: a business's own service pages and case studies, directories and review sites, and articles that compare options.

That's good news, because evidence can be added. If your site never says you work with hospitals, an assistant has nothing to cite when someone asks for a supplier that does. Kite writes the pages that answer your customers' questions directly. It finds the directories and articles the assistants already cite and prepares your listing requests and pitches. Then it runs the questions again to see what changed.

Questions people ask

Is the AI visibility checker free?

Yes. The check is free and you don't need an account.

Does a mention count as a recommendation?

No. Kite reads each answer and only counts it when the answer recommends you or presents you as an option. A passing mention, or a line advising against you, doesn't count.

Which AI assistants does it check?

It checks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, each with web search on. ChatGPT and Gemini are read the way a signed-out visitor sees them.

Is everyone on the "recommended instead" list a competitor?

Not always. The list shows the businesses each answer recommended in your place, as the assistant named them. Some can be partners, tools you already use, or brands owned by the same company, so read it as what buyers were told rather than a checked list of rivals.

Why did my result change when I ran it again?

AI assistants don't give the same answer every time, and they search the web fresh for many questions. That's why it's worth tracking over time rather than trusting one check.

I rank on Google. Why don't AI assistants mention me?

Ranking for your own name isn't the same as being the answer to a buyer's question. Assistants often cite directories, comparison articles and pages that answer the question directly, and your site may not have those pages yet.

How does Kite get my business recommended?

Kite finds the questions where competitors get recommended instead of you and reads the sources those answers cite. Then it writes the pages that answer those questions, and prepares listing requests and pitches for the directories and articles the assistants rely on. On a site Kite hosts, it publishes the pages itself.

Can Kite track this every week?

Yes. After you sign up, Kite tracks the questions that matter to your business across the AI assistants. It tells you when you start getting named, or when a competitor does.
