# Compare your Google rankings with your AI answer visibility

## Key Takeaways

- To compare your Google rankings with your AI answer visibility, take the keywords you rank for, turn each one into the question a buyer would ask an AI assistant, and check whether the answers to that question name you. The useful findings are the topics where the two disagree.
- Ranking well in Google doesn't mean AI will recommend you. AI answers often lean on roundups, comparison articles, and community threads, and a page that ranks can still be left out if it doesn't answer the question directly or name you as an option.
- Kite pulls your ranked keywords with their position, monthly searches, and whether Google shows an AI Overview, then checks the same topics in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.
- Kite treats the two kinds of disagreement differently. Topics where you rank but AI ignores you are usually the biggest opportunity, because the demand is proven. Topics where AI names you but Google doesn't rank you are wins to defend and build on.
- After the work ships, Kite checks both sides again: whether AI answers now name you, and whether your pages earn more impressions and clicks in Search Console.

## Why ranking in Google doesn't guarantee a place in AI answers

Most companies have spent years learning where they stand in Google. They know their best keywords, which pages bring in traffic, and roughly where they sit against competitors. Now more buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for a recommendation before they search at all, and many of the people who still search see an AI Overview at the top of the results. That raises a fair question: does the work you did to rank carry over to AI answers?

Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. AI assistants often run their own web searches before they answer, so pages that rank well are part of the pool they read. But an assistant doesn't recommend whoever ranks first. It builds an answer from the sources that address the question most directly, and those are often category roundups, side-by-side comparisons, review sites, and Reddit threads. A company can rank third for "invoicing software for contractors" and still be missing from every AI answer to "What's the best invoicing tool for a small contracting business?" because the pages the assistants cite list five competitors and never mention it.

The reverse happens too. A company can show up in AI answers for a topic it barely ranks for, because a well-known roundup or a popular community thread mentions it. That visibility is real, but it rests on someone else's page, and it isn't capturing the people who still search Google for the same thing.

So the comparison worth making isn't "Are we doing well in Google?" or "Are we doing well in AI?" on their own. It's "Where do the two disagree, and why?" Answering that takes a few steps:

- a list of the keywords you rank for, with how much search demand each one has
- the questions buyers would ask an AI assistant about those same topics
- the AI answers to those questions, with who they name and which pages they cite
- a side-by-side view that shows where you win in one and lose in the other.

Doing this by hand means exporting rankings, rewriting each keyword as a question, pasting the questions into several assistants, and logging the results in a spreadsheet. It's careful, repetitive work, and the answers change often enough that one pass goes stale quickly. That makes it a good job for an AI agent.

If you want a quick first look, Kite's free [AI visibility checker](/ai-visibility-checker) asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude the questions your customers ask, and in about 45 seconds it shows whether they recommend you and who they recommend instead. It's free and needs no account.

Kite is an AI marketer. It researches your business, builds a growth strategy, and ships the work that brings you new customers. Comparing your search rankings with your AI visibility is how it decides where that work should go first.

## How Kite compares your Google rankings with your AI answer visibility

Kite starts with your search standing. It pulls the keywords your site ranks for, with each keyword's position, monthly searches, and whether Google shows an AI Overview for it. It also uses what it knows about your products, positioning, and competitors to pick the topics that matter to your business.

Next, Kite turns your strongest keywords into the questions buyers ask AI assistants and tracks them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. For every answer, it records whether you're named, which competitors are named instead, and which pages the answer cites.

Then Kite puts the two side by side, topic by topic. It flags the topics where you rank but AI answers leave you out, and the topics where AI answers name you but you don't rank. It reads the pages the answers cite to work out why, ranks the gaps by how much search demand sits behind them, and proposes the work to close them. Once the work ships, it checks both your AI visibility and your search performance again.

### Start with the keywords you already rank for

Your search rankings are the best evidence you have of what people want from you. Kite pulls the keywords your site ranks for in Google from its built-in search data, so this works without a separate SEO account. For each keyword, it records:

- your position in Google and the page on your site that ranks
- how many people search for it each month
- how hard it is to rank for
- whether Google shows an AI Overview for that search.

That last detail matters more than it looks. A search that triggers an AI Overview is one where Google has already decided an AI answer belongs at the top of the page. If you rank for it but aren't in the AI answers on that topic, buyers may read a summary that names your competitors before they ever reach your listing.

When Kite runs a comparison, it fetches fresh ranking data if what it has is more than a day old, so the comparison reflects where you stand now. If you connect Google Search Console, Kite adds the queries, impressions, clicks, and average position your own pages earn. If you connect Semrush, it adds your competitors' rankings and the keywords they rank for that you don't.

### Turn keywords into the questions buyers ask AI

A keyword and an AI question aren't the same thing, so Kite translates one into the other before comparing them. People type short phrases into Google, such as "invoicing software contractors." They ask AI assistants full questions, such as "What invoicing tool works best for a contractor with a small crew?" Comparing a keyword ranking against a question nobody asks would tell you very little.

Kite rewrites your high-demand keywords as the plain questions a buyer would ask and adds them to the questions it tracks for you. It favors keywords where Google already shows an AI Overview, because those searches have proven they produce AI answers. Each tracked question stays unbranded, which means it doesn't include your company name, so the answers show whether assistants recommend you to someone who doesn't already know you.

Kite adds only a few of these questions at a time and checks them against the ones you already track, so the list stays focused on the topics that matter. You can review the questions, edit them, or add your own.

Kite then asks each tracked question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode, every day by default. It stores every answer along with the brands it names, the pages it cites, and the web searches the assistant ran to write it.

### Which keywords do you rank for that AI answers ignore you on?

Kite answers this by joining your search data and your AI answer data into one row per topic, and keeping only the topics where they disagree. Each row shows your Google position, the monthly searches, whether an AI Overview appears, and how many AI answers on that topic named you. A typical finding reads like this: you rank third for a keyword with 2,400 searches a month, Google shows an AI Overview for it, and none of the AI answers on that topic name you.

Kite sorts the disagreements into two groups, because they call for different responses.

**You rank in Google, but AI answers leave you out.** These are usually the most valuable gaps. The search demand is proven, you already have a page that Google trusts, and an AI answer is sitting in front of the same buyers. Closing the gap often means improving a page you already own rather than starting from nothing.

**AI answers name you, but you don't rank in Google.** These are wins to defend. Your AI visibility on these topics usually rests on pages other people control, such as a roundup that lists you or a thread where customers recommend you. Kite treats them as a reason to build a page of your own that can rank, so you capture the people who still search Google and you aren't relying on someone else's article to stay in the answers.

Kite also lists the topics where you do well in both, so you can see what's working and protect it.

### Find out why Google and AI answers disagree

A gap only becomes useful once you know what's causing it. For each topic where you rank but AI answers leave you out, Kite opens the pages the answers cite and records which brands each page names, what kind of page it is, and whether your company appears on it.

The cause is often plain once you look. The assistants might cite the same two roundup articles across every answer, and both list your competitors without you. Or the cited pages might be direct comparisons, and your ranking page might be a product page that never answers the comparison question. Sometimes a competitor has a clear guide that answers the exact question, while your ranking page covers the topic only in passing.

The web searches the assistants ran add another clue. If ChatGPT searched "best invoicing app for contractors 2026" before answering, you've learned which search it relied on. Kite can check where you rank for that search and which pages rank above you. With SerpApi, it can put the live Google results for a question next to the sources the AI answers cited, so you can see whether the assistants are drawing from the same pages Google ranks or from somewhere else entirely.

When several competitors above you share the same advantage, such as appearing in the same roundups, Kite names that pattern, because it's usually the strongest lead on what to do next.

### Fix the gaps with the most demand behind them first

Kite ranks the work by how much search demand sits behind each gap, combined with how completely AI answers leave you out. A keyword with 2,400 monthly searches, an AI Overview, and no AI mentions of you comes ahead of a keyword with 90 searches where you already appear in some answers.

The fix depends on the cause Kite found:

- **Your ranking page doesn't answer the question directly.** Kite rewrites or extends it so the answer appears near the top in plain language, with the specifics an assistant can quote, such as who the product is for, what it costs, and how it compares.
- **The assistants cite a format you don't have.** If the answers lean on comparison pages or category guides, Kite writes that page for your site using what it knows about your products, positioning, and competitors.
- **The cited sources are pages you don't control.** Kite finds the roundups and review pages that list your competitors and leave you out, finds the person responsible for each one, and drafts a pitch that explains why you belong.
- **AI names you, but you don't rank.** Kite plans a page of your own on that topic so you can rank for it in Google and hold your place in AI answers.

Kite shows you the plan before it does the work. Approve it in the conversation, in the Kite web app or in Slack, and Kite publishes the changes to a site it hosts or through your connected content system.

### Check both sides after the work ships

A change meant to close a gap should move both numbers, so Kite measures both. For each action in the plan, Kite compares how often AI answers named you on the targeted questions in the 28 days after the work finished with the 28 days before. For each new or updated page, it compares the page's impressions, clicks, and click-through rate in Search Console for the 28 days on either side of publishing, once Google's figures are final.

Kite reports a change as up or down only when it's bigger than the normal variation in AI answers, so you don't chase a lucky week. The results feed the next round: topics that closed come off the list, stubborn gaps get a different approach, and new disagreements show up as your rankings and the answers change.

## What you get

- **A side-by-side view of search and AI.** For each topic, your Google position, monthly searches, whether an AI Overview appears, and how many AI answers name you.
- **The gaps in both directions.** Topics where you rank but AI leaves you out, and topics where AI names you but you don't rank, sorted by search demand.
- **An explanation for each gap.** The pages the AI answers cite, which competitors they name, the searches the assistants ran, and what your ranking page is missing.
- **A prioritized plan.** The page updates, new pages, and outreach that Kite expects to close the most valuable gaps first.
- **The work itself.** Kite publishes the approved changes to your website and drafts the pitches for pages other people control.
- **A before-and-after result.** AI visibility on the targeted questions and Search Console performance for the changed pages, measured over the same window before and after.

## How to get started

Start with the free [AI visibility checker](/ai-visibility-checker) if you haven't yet. It shows in about 45 seconds whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude recommend you.

When you want the full comparison, sign up for Kite and ask in plain words. You might say, "Which keywords do we rank for where ChatGPT doesn't mention us?" or "Compare our Google rankings with how we show up in AI answers." You can work with Kite in your browser or in Slack.

Kite pulls your rankings from its built-in search data, proposes the questions to track, and runs the first comparison without any other accounts connected. Connect Google Search Console when you want your own impressions and clicks in the comparison, and when you want Kite to measure each changed page afterward. Connect Semrush when you want your competitors' rankings alongside yours. If your website runs outside Kite, connect your content system when you're ready for Kite to publish changes.

Kite proposes the work and asks before it publishes or sends outreach. As you get comfortable with its judgment, you can let more of the work run on its own.

## Integrations used to compare Google rankings with AI answers

Kite's built-in data covers both sides of the comparison, so you can start without connecting anything. Connect your own search tools when you want Kite to use the data your team already has.

### Collect rankings and AI answers

- [DataForSEO + Kite](/integrations/dataforseo.md): DataForSEO is built into Kite. It supplies your ranked keywords, search volumes, and AI Overview flags, along with the AI answers Kite tracks.
- [SerpApi + Kite](/integrations/serpapi.md): Put the live Google results for a question next to the sources AI answers cite for the same question.

### Add your own search and competitor data

- [Google Search Console + Kite](/integrations/google-search-console.md): Add the queries, impressions, clicks, and average position your pages earn, and measure each changed page before and after.
- [Semrush + Kite](/integrations/semrush.md): Add your competitors' rankings and the keywords they rank for that you don't, to explain why some brands appear in AI answers and others don't.

## Common questions

### Is SEO still worth doing now that people ask AI?

Yes. AI assistants often search the web before they answer, and pages that rank well are among the ones they read. Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode appear right inside search. What has changed is that ranking is no longer the finish line. A ranking page also needs to answer the question directly and appear in the sources assistants trust, which is why the comparison on this page is useful. For a longer look at how the two disciplines relate, see SEO vs GEO: How to See Where You Rank on Google and Where AI Answers Mention You (coming soon).

### Can Google Search Console show me my visibility in AI Overviews?

Not on its own. Search Console counts impressions and clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode within your regular web search totals, without a separate report for them, so it can't tell you whether an AI answer named you or cited your page. Kite fills that gap by asking the questions in Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode directly and recording the sources each answer cites, then putting those results next to your Search Console data.

### Does Kite include Claude in the comparison?

Kite's daily tracking asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. Claude is included in the free AI visibility checker and in the full AI visibility assessment Kite runs when you ask for one. The two measurements use different assistants and question sets, so Kite labels which one a number comes from and doesn't compare them as if they were the same series.

### Can I compare a competitor's Google rankings with their AI visibility?

Yes. Kite can run the same assessment on any domain, including one your team doesn't own. For a competitor, it reports their ranked keywords and search volumes, how often AI answers name them, and the cited pages and roundups they appear in that you don't. Kite keeps a one-off assessment like this in the conversation rather than adding it to your own tracking.

### How often should I run the comparison?

Run it once before you change anything so you have a baseline. After that, Kite's daily AI tracking keeps the answer side current, Kite pulls fresh ranking data each time it runs a comparison, and it tells you when a tracked question moves for real. A full side-by-side review makes sense after each round of work ships, or whenever your rankings shift noticeably.
