# The 12 best AI marketing automation tools for small teams in 2026

## Key Takeaways

- Almost every marketing automation tool has AI now. What separates them is who decides what happens next: you, an agent working from a goal you typed, or an AI marketer that finds the work itself.
- Kite is the one tool here you can hand whole pieces of marketing to. It works from your Slack, researches your business, proposes the next move, and builds the pages, emails, and campaigns, including inside the Mailchimp account you already use.
- If your marketing runs mostly on email, an email platform with a built-in agent is the right core. ActiveCampaign leads on automation depth, Klaviyo and Omnisend suit online stores, Customer.io suits software products, and Brevo and Mailchimp have the lowest entry prices.
- Zapier, Make, and n8n let you build your own agents across the apps you connect. They suit a team with someone who likes building workflows.
- Budget for two meters. Email platforms charge by list size, and their AI usually draws on a separate pool of credits or tasks.

## What are AI marketing automation tools?

AI marketing automation tools are marketing platforms that use AI to plan, build, or run the emails, segments, and workflows a team used to set up by hand. Classic marketing automation is a set of rules: when someone joins your list, wait two days, then send the welcome email. Rules are predictable and cheap to run at volume, but someone has to design every branch in advance ([José Cabal](https://josecabal.com/blog/ai-agents-vs-marketing-automation-2026/)). On a team of two or three people, that design time is usually what runs out first.

AI changes who does the designing. The twelve tools below fall into four kinds, sorted by how much of that work each one takes on:

- **An AI marketer** finds the work, decides what's worth doing, and builds it across your website, email, and outreach.
- **Email and lifecycle platforms with a built-in agent** build a campaign, flow, or segment from a goal you describe, inside their own platform.
- **Automation builders** let you design your own agent that works across the apps you connect.
- **A writing tool** drafts the content that goes into your emails and pages.

The payoff shows up in hours. One ActiveCampaign user typed a single request for a re-engagement campaign aimed at subscribers who hadn't opened an email in 90 days. The agent built a three-step automation with the entry condition, a five-day wait, and a follow-up email in four minutes, a job the author puts at thirty minutes minimum by hand. Over the month their campaign count went from 4 to 11. They call that "mostly a courage problem": when a draft took hours they put it off, and when it took minutes they sent it ([Blog Recode](https://blogrecode.com/activecampaign-ai-30-day-autonomous-marketing/)).

Each entry below is judged on the same three things: what starts the work, how far the AI carries it before handing it back to you, and what it costs at the list sizes small teams actually have.

## An AI marketer that finds the work

### 1. Kite

Kite is an AI marketer in your Slack. It researches your business, builds a growth strategy, and ships the work that brings you new customers. Every other tool on this list waits for you to open it and describe a task. Kite finds what needs doing and does it.

The work starts on day one. When Kite joins your Slack, it reads your website and offers one or two pieces of work it can start on. In its first week it studies your product, customers, and competitors, along with what AI answers say about you, then turns that into a weekly growth plan. From then on, it reviews new messages in your team's channels against your active goals and watches your site traffic, search rankings, and visibility in AI answers. When it spots a move worth making, it posts it in Slack. You approve an initiative with one click, and Kite breaks it into tasks and starts.

What Kite builds goes well past email:

- It builds landing pages, comparison pages, and whole marketing websites, then hosts them and keeps improving them.
- It writes email sequences and campaigns from what it knows about your customers and what your past emails earned.
- It builds prospect lists, scores each person against your best customers, and writes one-to-one outreach from its own team email address.
- It drafts ad concepts from research on the ads your competitors are running right now.
- It runs recurring work on a schedule or a trigger, such as a weekly conversion check or a monthly sweep of competitors.

Kite also works inside the email platform you already pay for. Connect Mailchimp, and Kite creates the campaign, picks the audience or segment, writes the subject line, preview text, and email, then runs Mailchimp's send checklist and fixes what it flags before scheduling the send. Afterward it can resend to the subscribers who didn't open, set up a subject-line test, or set up an abandoned-cart automation for a connected store. Ask it to win back subscribers who haven't opened anything in three months, and it comes back with the segment, the email, and the send time ([Mailchimp + Kite](/integrations/mailchimp.md)).

Kite brings its own research. More than 20 data sources are built in, including Apollo for companies and contacts, DataForSEO for keywords and rankings, and PageSpeed Insights for site speed, so there's no separate data subscription to set up. You connect the tools that hold your private data, such as HubSpot, Google Analytics, Search Console, and your ad accounts, from a catalog of more than 2,300 apps.

By default, Kite proposes before it acts on anything that changes your public messaging or spends money, and it simply does routine, reversible work and tells you about it. Once you've seen enough of its work, you can switch it to act first. Pricing is per team rather than per seat. The free plan includes a one-time $15 in credits, Growth costs $100 a month and includes $100 in credits, and Business is custom-priced. One credit is one dollar of usage, and there's no cap on how many people use a plan.

Kite is the strongest fit when you want marketing handled, not another platform to operate. It works alongside the email platforms below rather than replacing them.

## Email and lifecycle platforms with a built-in agent

These platforms send your email, and often your SMS, and their agents work on the data already inside them: your contacts, your past campaigns, and your store's orders. Each agent turns a plain-language goal into a draft campaign, flow, or segment, and you review it and switch it on. Choose among them by what you sell and how big your list is.

### 2. ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is the deepest automation platform in this group, and its Active Intelligence agents can build a full multi-step automation from one sentence. You state the objective, such as "a 4-email win-back sequence for former customers," and the Automations agent returns a sequenced journey with an email written for each step ([ActiveCampaign](https://help.activecampaign.com/hc/en-us/articles/22928174918428-Active-Intelligence-Automations-agent-Beta-Release)).

It can also improve automations you already run. Marcus Taylor of Venture Harbour, whose companies have used ActiveCampaign for years, pointed it at a live onboarding sequence. It pulled a baseline, found an unfinished A/B test, flagged a high unsubscribe rate, noticed a missing preheader, and proposed a ranked plan. When he asked it to make the fixes, it added goal exits, a day-seven re-engagement branch, and a resend to non-openers after 48 hours. Its limits showed in the same test: it couldn't add A/B split steps on its own, and it ignored his one-column, one-image layout request on a fresh email. He rates the AI four out of five ([Venture Harbour](https://ventureharbour.com/activecampaign-review/)).

ActiveCampaign has no free plan, only a 14-day trial. At 1,000 contacts with annual billing, Starter costs $15 a month, Plus $49, Pro $79, and Enterprise $145. Starter caps each automation at five actions, and Starter and Plus get limited use of Active Intelligence, while Pro and Enterprise get unlimited use ([ActiveCampaign](https://www.activecampaign.com/pricing)). Watch your list hygiene, too: accounts created since November 3, 2025 pay for every contact, including unsubscribed and bounced ones ([Venture Harbour](https://ventureharbour.com/activecampaign-review/)).

ActiveCampaign fits a small team whose marketing runs on email and needs real branching logic. Plus is where most of Taylor's companies landed.

### 3. Klaviyo

Klaviyo is the email and SMS platform built around online store data, and its Composer agent is one of the most capable agents in this group. Composer analyzes your account, audits your flows, forms, and segments, and checks a campaign's links, audience, and settings before you send it. From a goal you describe, it drafts campaigns for email, SMS, and push, builds a flow's structure and then its messages, and creates segments with a count of matching profiles. It can also run tasks on a schedule you set to surface revenue opportunities ([Klaviyo](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/52230280693403)).

Composer drafts and recommends, and you sign off before anything goes to customers. It works best on emails built in Klaviyo's drag-and-drop editor and is weaker on image-heavy templates.

Every Klaviyo customer gets a free Composer plan with 500 credits a cycle. A paid Composer plan costs $20 a month for 2,000 credits, and Klaviyo estimates that creating a campaign costs anywhere from $0.10 to $10.00 depending on its size ([Klaviyo](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/55587298026395)). The platform itself is free up to 250 profiles and 500 sends a month. The email plan costs $20 a month at 251 to 500 profiles, $30 at up to 1,000, and $100 at 3,501 to 5,000 ([Retailpresso](https://retailpresso.com/blog/klaviyo-pricing)).

Klaviyo fits a store, especially a Shopify store, where abandoned-cart and post-purchase flows built on order data drive repeat sales.

### 4. Omnisend

Omnisend is an ecommerce email platform whose agent offers fixes before you go looking for them. Omnisend Agent reviews your signup forms, automations, and campaign audiences, then suggests changes based on ecommerce practice. It might suggest adding a second email to a one-email cart recovery flow, or building a welcome, replenishment, or back-in-stock workflow when your account is missing one. You preview the change, apply it, or dismiss it ([Omnisend](https://support.omnisend.com/en/articles/16613811-omnisend-ai-ai-recommendations)).

The agent also works where you're already working. Describe a segment such as "customers who made at least two purchases but didn't open the last campaign," and it builds the rules, shows the matching contacts, and asks a follow-up question when your description is ambiguous. It writes subject lines and email text in your brand voice from your past campaigns, and Campaign Booster resends a campaign to non-openers with a new subject line 48 hours later. Most of these features are on the free plan ([Omnisend](https://support.omnisend.com/en/articles/11646451-omnisend-agent-get-started)).

The free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 emails a month ([Omnisend](https://www.omnisend.com/pricing/)). Standard costs $16 a month at up to 500 contacts and $20 at up to 1,000, and Pro is a flat $59 a month up to 2,000 contacts. The $11.20 figure on Omnisend's pricing page is a 30 percent discount for paying three months up front ([True Cost of Email](https://truecostofemail.com/blog/omnisend-pricing-hidden-costs/)).

Omnisend fits a Shopify or WooCommerce store that wants an agent pointing out what to fix, at a lower price than most of this group.

### 5. HubSpot Marketing Hub

HubSpot pairs its CRM and marketing tools with a set of Breeze agents, and the strongest marketing agents sit on its Professional plan. The Content Agent drafts blog posts, social posts, and landing pages from your account data and brand voice, and you review every draft before it publishes ([HubSpot](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/website-and-landing-pages/create-content-with-content-agent)). The Nurture Agent rewrites the subject line, preview text, body, and call to action of an automated email for each recipient, using CRM data and web research. You preview sample contacts, lock any section you want left alone, and choose what share of recipients gets the rewrite, with half as the default. A report then compares the two versions ([HubSpot](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/marketing-email/personalize-automated-emails-with-nurture-agent)).

The plan gap is wide for a small team. Starter costs $20 a seat a month ([Enterpricey](https://enterpricey.com/hubspot/marketing-hub/pricing)) and includes Agent Hub, an agent builder, the Data Agent, simple automation of up to 10 automated actions, and 500 HubSpot Credits. Professional starts at $800 a month on an annual commitment ([Toolsolved](https://toolsolved.com/guides/best-marketing-automation-tools-for-small-teams-in-2026-activecampaign-vs-keap-vs-mailchimp-vs-hubspot)) with three seats and 3,000 credits, plus a required one-time $3,000 onboarding fee ([HubSpot](https://www.hubspot.com/pricing/marketing)). Agents spend credits per job at a penny a credit. One piece of content from the Content Agent costs 1,000 credits, so Professional's monthly allowance covers three pieces ([Supered](https://www.supered.io/blog/hubspot-breeze-ai/)).

HubSpot fits a B2B team that already runs its CRM there and wants marketing on the same records. For a team on Starter, upgrading to Professional only for the AI "is rarely the right trade" ([José Cabal](https://josecabal.com/blog/hubspot-breeze-ai-smb-honest-review/)). The [Kite vs HubSpot Breeze comparison](/compare/kite-vs-hubspot-breeze.md) covers how the two approaches differ.

### 6. Customer.io

Customer.io is a messaging platform for software products, and its agent works directly on the product events and metrics in your account. Ask the agent to "create a segment with people that opened an email in the last 90 days" or which onboarding automation had the lowest deliverability this month, and it builds the segment or pulls the answer. It can create automations, one-time sends, and emails in Customer.io's Design Studio ([Customer.io](https://docs.customer.io/ai/agent/)).

You choose how far it can reach. By default the agent works on drafts and can't change live automations. An admin can turn on live editing, and then the agent either asks before each change or runs in an Auto mode where a separate model checks each change against your request and approves the ones that match. The agent stays inside Customer.io, so it doesn't browse the web or read your external databases.

The Essentials plan costs $100 a month for 5,000 profiles, with unlimited seats, one million emails, and one weekly scheduled task for the agent. Companies that have raised under $10 million can apply for a free year through the startup program ([Customer.io](https://customer.io/pricing)).

Customer.io fits a software company that sends onboarding and lifecycle messages based on what people do in its product.

### 7. Brevo

Brevo has the lowest paid entry point in this group, and its Aura assistant drafts the skeleton of an automation from a description. Describe the flow, for example "send an email when a contact is added to the New subscribers list and wait 2 days before sending an SMS," and Aura sets the trigger, waits, A/B split percentages, SMS steps, and list changes. It doesn't write the email content or the segment filters yet, so you add those before you switch the automation on ([Brevo](https://help.brevo.com/hc/en-us/articles/34804478408850-Create-an-automation-with-Aura-Brevo-s-AI-powered-assistant)). Aura's marketing agent also designs full campaign emails, writes subject lines, and translates templates ([Brevo](https://help.brevo.com/hc/en-us/articles/25951005963666-Discover-Aura-Brevo-s-AI-powered-assistant)).

The free plan sends up to 300 emails a day. Starter costs $9 a month and includes an AI content generator and a connection that lets you manage campaigns from ChatGPT or Claude. Standard costs $18 a month and adds unlimited multi-step workflows, A/B testing, and AI send-time optimization. AI segmentation and a data analyst you can question in plain language come on the Professional plan ([Brevo](https://www.brevo.com/pricing/)).

Brevo fits a team on a tight budget that's comfortable finishing an automation once the AI has laid out its steps.

### 8. Mailchimp

Mailchimp is the most familiar name in email, and its AI is strongest at analysis. Analytics AI answers plain-language questions about your campaigns, audience growth, and store revenue, explains how it calculated each answer, and recommends a next step. A button pre-fills the campaign or automation it recommends, and you confirm before anything is created ([Mailchimp](https://mailchimp.com/help/use-analytics-ai/)). Nine AI-powered flow templates, including abandoned cart, customer win-back, and birthday, generate on-brand emails from your brand kit, though they require a Standard plan, a US mailing address, and a connected store ([Mailchimp](https://mailchimp.com/help/create-pre-built-journey-emails-intuit-ai/)).

A 30-day test on the Standard plan shows where it earns its keep. The abandoned-cart flow recovered 19 of 217 carts, and subject lines picked with Mailchimp's AI scorer averaged a 36.4 percent open rate against 28.7 percent for two hand-written controls. The content generator did less well, with four of six sample drafts needing full rewrites ([Smart Tools Pick](https://smarttoolspick.com/mailchimp-review-2026/)).

The free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 sends a month. Standard starts at $20 a month for 500 contacts after a 14-day trial, allows up to 200 steps per flow with branching, and includes the Intuit Assist AI features at no extra cost while they're in beta ([Mailchimp](https://mailchimp.com/pricing/marketing/)). Mailchimp fits a team that wants a well-known sender with solid reporting, and it's also an email platform Kite works inside.

## Automation builders where you design the agent

These tools connect thousands of apps, and each now lets you build an agent that reasons through a task instead of following fixed steps. They reach further than any email platform, but you write the agent's instructions and choose its tools yourself. They suit a team with someone who enjoys building.

### 9. Zapier

Zapier now puts agents inside ordinary Zaps, so one workflow can mix an AI step that reasons and calls tools with fixed steps that always behave the same way ([Zapier](https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/47402591569805-Migrating-from-Agents-to-AI-by-Zapier)). A run can start on a schedule or when something happens in a connected app, such as a new row in Google Sheets or a new email in Gmail ([Zapier](https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/45394909914381-Set-up-your-agent-s-trigger)). You can make any tool wait for your approval before it runs, and a run that uses more than 75 tasks pauses for review.

The best use is a workflow that genuinely branches. One team ran a lead-routing agent that started from each new HubSpot contact, looked up the person and company, scored the lead, and routed it to the right sales rep. It handled about 600 leads a month for roughly $84 in extra tasks over 60 days. The same team's daily metrics digest picked the same numbers every morning, so they rebuilt it as a plain Zap with one AI step for about $1 a month ([Pondero](https://pondero.ai/agents/guides/zapier-agents-60-day-buyer-guide-april-2026/)).

The free plan includes 100 tasks a month. Professional starts at $19.99 a month, and Team starts at $69 a month for up to 25 users. AI steps draw from the same task pool as everything else ([Zapier](https://zapier.com/pricing)). Zapier fits a team whose tools already talk to each other through Zaps.

### 10. Make

Make is a visual automation builder, and it's the least expensive way here to build your own marketing agent. A Make agent gets instructions, knowledge files such as your brand guidelines, and tools drawn from Make's apps and your own scenarios. Make also offers Maia, which builds automations from a conversation ([Make](https://help.make.com/introduction-to-make-ai-agent-new)).

One store owner built a newsletter agent this way. Topics go into a Google Sheet, a Make agent searches the store's Shopify products and writes the newsletter into a Google Doc, and a person checks the tone before sending. Each newsletter dropped from about two hours of work to 9 to 13 minutes, at about six cents of Make credits per run ([The Marketing Tinkerer](https://themarketingtinkerer.substack.com/p/ai-agent-for-writing-newsletters)).

The free plan gives you 1,000 credits a month and two active scenarios. Paid plans start at $9 a month for Core, $16 for Pro, and $29 for Teams, and AI agents are available on every plan while in beta ([Make](https://www.make.com/en/pricing)). Make fits a hands-on marketer who wants to build agents on a visual canvas for very little money.

### 11. n8n

n8n is the builder for teams that want the most control, including the option to host it themselves for free. An n8n agent gets a model, instructions, tools, and a knowledge base. It can run on its own every hour, day, or week, and it pauses for your approval before using any tool you mark as sensitive. You can also reach it from Slack ([n8n](https://docs.n8n.io/build/build-and-manage-agents)).

Mubashar Ali, an SEO consultant, used n8n and Claude to run his blog. Every Monday morning the workflow picked a topic from his Notion list, wrote a research brief, drafted the post, and prepared the SEO details, then left it in a review queue. He published 18 posts in 30 days, against 4 in the previous two months, and spent about 25 minutes reviewing each one ([Mubashar Ali](https://medium.com/write-a-catalyst/i-let-claude-n8n-run-my-entire-blog-for-30-days-heres-what-the-analytics-look-like-06106d3538dc)).

n8n bills per run of a whole workflow, however many steps it has. The hosted Starter plan costs $20 a month billed annually for 2,500 runs, Pro costs $50, and the self-hosted Community Edition is free ([n8n](https://n8n.io/pricing/)). n8n fits a team with technical help that wants low cost per run and full control.

## A writing tool that feeds your automation

### 12. Jasper

Jasper is a content platform built around your brand voice, and it supplies the writing your automation sends. You load examples of your best copy, your style guide, and your audience definitions, and Jasper's agents draft content across planning, creation, adaptation, and optimization ([Jasper](https://www.jasper.ai/agents)). Setup decides the result. In a six-week test with two small businesses, Jasper drafts needed 28 percent editing with Brand Voice configured, against 35 percent for ChatGPT given the same context. Without that setup, they needed 52 percent ([TheBizAI](https://thebizai.co/jasper-ai-review-small-business)).

Pro costs $59 a seat a month billed yearly, or $69 monthly, for one user. Adding teammates moves you to the custom-priced Business plan, which is also where most of Jasper's agent library sits ([Jasper](https://www.jasper.ai/pricing)). Jasper writes but doesn't send email or run flows, so it pairs with one of the platforms above. It fits a team that publishes a lot of content and wants it on-brand. The [Kite vs Jasper comparison](/compare/kite-vs-jasper.md) covers how a writing tool differs from an AI marketer.

## How the 12 tools compare

The clearest difference between these tools is what starts the work and how far the AI carries it before you step in.

| Tool | What starts the work | What the AI carries out | Free option | Paid starting point |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Kite | Kite finds the work, or you ask in Slack | Research, plans, websites, email, outreach, and ad concepts | Free plan with $15 in credits | Growth, $100 a month per team |
| ActiveCampaign | A goal you type | Full automations with emails, plus fixes to live sequences | 14-day trial | Starter, $15 a month for 1,000 contacts billed annually |
| Klaviyo | A goal you type, or a scheduled task | Campaigns, flows, segments, and audits | Free up to 250 profiles, with Composer credits | Email, $20 a month for up to 500 profiles |
| Omnisend | Its own recommendations, or a prompt | Segments, email text, and fixes to forms and flows | Free up to 250 contacts | Standard, $16 a month for up to 500 contacts |
| HubSpot Marketing Hub | A recommendation or a prompt | Content, per-recipient email rewrites, and custom agents | Free for up to 2 users | Starter, $20 a seat a month |
| Customer.io | A prompt | Segments, automations, and emails | Free year for qualifying startups | Essentials, $100 a month for 5,000 profiles |
| Brevo | A description you type | Automation steps, with email content added by you | Free, 300 emails a day | Starter, $9 a month |
| Mailchimp | A question or a template you pick | Analysis, pre-filled campaigns, and AI-written flow emails | Free up to 250 contacts | Standard, $20 a month for 500 contacts |
| Zapier | A schedule or an app event | Multi-step work across connected apps | 100 tasks a month | Professional, $19.99 a month |
| Make | A schedule or an app event | Agents you build across connected apps | 1,000 credits a month | Core, $9 a month |
| n8n | A schedule, a message, or an app event | Agents you build, self-hosted if you like | Self-hosted Community Edition | Starter, $20 a month billed annually |
| Jasper | A prompt | On-brand drafts for content and campaigns | None | Pro, $59 a seat a month billed yearly |

Prices come from each vendor's pricing page or the sources cited above, as of October 2026. Several of these change often, so check the current figure before you buy.

## How much does AI marketing automation cost a small team?

Most small teams pay two meters: one for the size of their list and one for the AI. Email platforms price by contacts, so the bill rises as your list grows even when you send the same amount. A store that crosses a profile band on Klaviyo pays more the next month with no change in sending ([Retailpresso](https://retailpresso.com/blog/klaviyo-pricing)).

The AI then draws on its own allowance. HubSpot agents spend HubSpot Credits, Klaviyo's Composer spends Composer credits, Customer.io sells extra AI credits, Zapier counts tasks, Make counts credits, and n8n counts workflow runs. Kite works the same way, drawing every conversation and task from one pool of credits, but it prices per team instead of per seat or per contact.

At about 1,000 contacts, the entry prices for real automation look like this:

- Omnisend Standard costs $20 a month.
- Klaviyo's email plan costs $30 a month.
- ActiveCampaign Plus costs $49 a month on annual billing, with no step limits.
- HubSpot Starter costs $20 for each seat, and the strongest marketing agents need Professional.

For most small teams, the AI allowance included in a plan covers light use. Heavy content generation is where the second meter starts to matter, so check what a single campaign or piece of content costs before you lean on it.

## How to choose the right tool

Start with one question: do you want a tool to operate, or do you want the marketing handled?

- If you want the marketing handled, start with Kite. It finds the next move, builds the pages and emails, and works in your existing email platform when you connect it.
- If your marketing is mostly email and you want to keep running it yourself, pick the platform that matches your business. ActiveCampaign suits service and B2B businesses that need branching automation, Klaviyo and Omnisend suit online stores, and Customer.io suits software products.
- If price is the main constraint, Brevo and Mailchimp have the lowest paid entry points, and Omnisend's free plan includes most of its AI.
- If you already run your CRM in HubSpot, add its agents, but weigh the jump from Starter to Professional first.
- If someone on your team likes building, use Zapier, Make, or n8n to build agents for the specific jobs your other tools don't cover.

Before you pay, build one real workflow in a trial of the exact plan you'd buy. A welcome series with one branch and one delay shows a plan's limits faster than any feature list ([Toolsolved](https://toolsolved.com/guides/best-marketing-automation-tools-for-small-teams-in-2026-activecampaign-vs-keap-vs-mailchimp-vs-hubspot)).

## Common questions

### Are there free AI marketing automation tools?

Yes, several tools on this list have free plans that include AI. Kite's free plan includes the whole product with a one-time $15 in credits. Klaviyo gives every customer 500 Composer credits a cycle, and its free plan covers 250 profiles. Omnisend's free plan includes its AI segment builder and email writing for up to 250 contacts. Zapier, Make, and n8n's self-hosted Community Edition let you build small agents at no cost. Free plans fit a small list or a trial, and most teams outgrow them as their list passes a few hundred contacts.

### What is the difference between marketing automation and an AI marketing agent?

Marketing automation follows the steps you set up in advance, and an AI agent decides the next step from the situation in front of it. Automation is predictable and cheap at volume, which is why it still runs most welcome series and cart reminders. An agent handles the cases a rule can't anticipate ([José Cabal](https://josecabal.com/blog/ai-agents-vs-marketing-automation-2026/)). The tools on this list combine the two: their agents build automations for you, and an AI marketer like Kite decides which automations, pages, and campaigns are worth building in the first place.

### Do I still need an email platform if I use an AI marketer?

For email to people who subscribed to hear from you, yes. That's where their consent, preferences, and history live. Kite connects to Mailchimp and works inside it, writing and scheduling campaigns and managing automations there. It also has its own team email address for one-to-one outreach to prospects it has researched, and many teams use both ([Mailchimp + Kite](/integrations/mailchimp.md)).

### Can AI marketing automation run on its own?

Yes, and most tools let you decide how much it does without checking in. Kite proposes first by default and can be switched to act first once you trust its work. Customer.io offers an Auto mode in which a second model approves changes that match your request ([Customer.io](https://docs.customer.io/ai/agent/)). Zapier lets you require approval for some tools and not others ([Zapier](https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/47402591569805-Migrating-from-Agents-to-AI-by-Zapier)). Klaviyo's Composer and HubSpot's Content Agent keep a person's sign-off before anything reaches customers. Start where you're comfortable and give the tool more room as it earns it.
